Starting a new life in a foreign country is an immense challenge, filled with uncertainty and hope. For many refugees resettling in the United States, the process begins with the essentials: finding shelter, navigating new cultural norms, and building a foundation for a stable life. HIAS Immigration & Citizenship, an organization dedicated to protecting and supporting refugees, plays a pivotal role in this journey by offering crucial assistance that extends beyond paperwork.
Why Cleaning Baskets Matter
When a refugee family steps into their new home for the first time, it may be bare, devoid of basic necessities. The simple act of providing a cleaning basket filled with essential household supplies helps ease this transition. These baskets may include cleaning sprays, sponges, disinfectants, and other items that symbolize cleanliness, safety, and the chance to start anew. The gesture, while simple, has a profound emotional impact, as it signals to these families that they are cared for and welcomed by their new community.
My involvement in this project was more than an act of a one time thing; it was an extension of my belief that every newcomer deserves to feel secure and at home. I thankfully was able to use some of my money that I made from bake sales to create 8 cleaning baskets for HIAS!
How You Can Help
Contributing to HIAS initiatives can take many forms: donating household supplies, volunteering time, or spreading the word about refugee support programs.
